Upgrade and Migration SLES 10 to SLES 11 SP2 running on VMware ESX 5.5

1. Backup system

Make backup system image on Physical Servers use Clonezilla
2. Restore system images to VMware virtual machine

– You can create a virtual machine template based on Linux for SLES 10

– Upload SLES 11 SP2 iso file to VMware Datastore

– Setup boot from SLES 11 SP2 iso

– Upgrade system
3. Verify your configured

3.1 Routing

vi /etc/sysconfig/network/routes

3.2 Network interface

– Open terminal, and run the following :

cp /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules.old

cat < /dev/null > /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

mv /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth5 /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0

(where ifcfg-eth5 is the current device you wish to rename to eth0)

Reboot Server

3.3 Firewall

yast firewall

– On eth0 configured in “Internal Zone”

– firewall script
vi /etc/sysconfig/scripts/SuSEfirewall2-custom

3.4 Verify your Services

– SMTP
– PROXY
– LDAP
– ETC
4. Backing up your VMWare guest

– Backup your VMWare guest using True Image HD tool
– Restore VM guest running on VMware ESX
